What Is High-Chrome White Iron?

White iron is a hard, abrasion-resistant cast iron alloy engineered by controlling carbon, chromium, nickel, and manganese content during the pour. The result is a casting with a hardness profile that outlasts standard gray or ductile iron in high-wear environments. At Kansas Castings, our specialty is high-chrome white iron — often referred to in the industry as Hi-Chrome — meeting ASTM A532 Class II Type D and Class III Type A, the standards for severe abrasion resistant applications across agriculture, mining, oilfield, and industrial equipment.

This performance comes from its microstructure, which is dominated by chromium carbides that give high chrome white iron castings their exceptional wear resistance but limited impact toughness.

ASTM A532 Grades Explained

  • Class II Type D → balanced wear resistance and toughness
  • Class III Type A → maximum abrasion resistance with lower impact tolerance
  • These ASTM A532 grades are selected based on the severity of the abrasion and the level of impact loading in the application.

We tailor the alloy composition of our high chrome white iron castings to your application’s specific hardness and impact requirements. Whether you need maximum surface hardness or a balanced wear/toughness profile, we cast it to spec.

Why Manufacturers Choose Kansas Castings for White Iron

  • Fast turnaround on smaller parts. Typical production runs ship on a 10-12 week cadence once patterns are in place.
  • ASTM A532 compliant. Class II Type D and Class III Type A high-chrome white iron, with custom alloy adjustments available.
  • Made in the USA. Family-run American foundry in Belle Plaine, Southern Kansas, casting iron parts since 1993.
  • Built for repeat orders. Once we tool up a new part, you get consistent, on-spec castings for the life of the program.

We specialize in high chrome white iron castings for severe abrasion applications where standard iron or steel components fail prematurely.

Common Applications for High Chrome White Iron Castings (ASTM A532)

High-chrome white iron is the right choice when ordinary iron or steel wears out too fast. Typical high chrome white iron castings we produce include:

  • Wear surfaces for agricultural tillage, planting, and harvesting equipment
  • Soil-engaging components for no-till and minimum-till implements
  • Pump impellers, liners, and housings handling abrasive slurries
  • Crusher and pulverizer wear parts
  • Chute and hopper liners
  • Industrial and commercial equipment subject to constant abrasion

White Iron vs. Ductile Iron

High chrome white iron castings are designed for abrasion resistance, while ductile iron is better suited for applications requiring strength and impact resistance.

If your part is failing due to wear, white iron is typically the better choice. If it’s failing due to shock or loading, ductile iron may be more appropriate.
