What Is Gray Iron (aka Grey Iron)?

Gray iron — also commonly spelled grey iron — is the workhorse cast iron of American industry. Its graphite flake microstructure gives it excellent machinability, vibration damping, and thermal conductivity, making it the right choice for engine components, pump housings, machine bases, and countless industrial parts. At Kansas Castings, we pour custom gray iron castings up to about 150 lbs from our Southern Kansas foundry.
