Iron Casting Frequently Asked Questions

Kansas Castings – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

White Iron, Gray Iron & Ductile Iron Castings

❓ What types of cast iron do you produce?

We specialize in white iron, gray iron, and ductile iron castings. Our two-plant facility pours a wide range of ASTM‑compliant alloys, including high-chrome white iron for wear resistance and ductile iron for strength and flexibility.

❓ What industries do you serve?

Kansas Castings proudly serves the agriculture, oilfield, irrigation, municipal, automotive, and commercial equipment industries. From fertilizer knives to pump housings, we provide cast iron parts built for durability and performance.

❓ What’s the difference between white iron, gray iron, and ductile iron?
Iron Type Key Traits Common Uses
White Iron Hard, wear-resistant; excellent for abrasion Agricultural knives, crusher parts, impellers
Gray Iron Good machinability, vibration damping Housings, manifolds, base plates
Ductile Iron Tough, impact-resistant; good elongation Pipe fittings, gear housings, yokes
❓ Do you cast to ASTM specifications?

Yes. We commonly pour castings to ASTM A532 (white iron), ASTM A48 (gray iron), and ASTM A536 (ductile iron). We can also work with customer-specific chemistry and mechanical property requirements.

❓ What is your casting size and weight range?

We produce castings from just a few pounds up to approximately 150 lbs, depending on geometry and alloy. Contact us to discuss your project’s specific needs.

❓ Can you provide turnkey machining?

For gray and ductile iron parts, Kansas Castings can supply as-cast, rough machined, or fully machined components, depending on your specifications. Note: white iron is too hard to machine economically and is supplied as-cast. We work closely with Heartland Manufacturing and other partners for precision work.

❓ Do you accept small and large production runs?

Yes. We handle everything from low-volume prototyping to high-production runs with consistent quality and repeatability. Let’s talk about your schedule and volume needs.

❓ Do you offer pattern storage?

Yes, we can store customer tooling and patterns on-site. We also offer optional pattern storage agreements for long-term customers.

❓ How do I request a quote?
